Endless River

Comprehensive material Sound Space

Li Xingyu, Jansword Zhu, 2022

Shenzhen-Hong Kong Biennale, UCCAlab

From the perspective of sound, humankind's exploitation of natural resources in the wake of industrialization is clearly evident. The symbiotic understanding that life presents along with the environment it is found in tends to fade away in crowded urban areas. Through his practice, Xingyu Li attempts to evoke the wonder of all things in the midst of accelerated urban development. In Endless River, Li breaks up different frequency bands of sounds from the rainforest, and distributes them vertically in the tank, giving each sound a relatively free space to “sound."

Jansword Zhu, in an adjacent spatial installation, uses four specific genetic fragments—BMP2 (shared by humans and insects), FOXP2 (shared by humans and birds), NNAT (shared by humans and mammals), and TRNA (shared by humans and plants)—to explore the hidden biological kinships across species. These sequences, all found in the human body, form a silent network of ancestral resonance. The audience gathers within a luminous chamber to feel the “chromosomal bonfire” composed of silicon crystals and light, and to experience sound in a primal way—an echo of how early humans might have transmitted stories by firelight.
